She was not some animal. Whittemore, 22, was convicted May 30 of second-degree murder in the killing of year-old Kogut, of New Hartford, Oneida County, inside her dorm room during a visit to The College at Brockport on Sept.
During the three-week-long jury trial, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley introduced evidence showing how Whittemore beat Kogut with his fists, and with various objects from her dorm room, including a clothing iron. Whittemore, who turned to face her as she spoke, wept quietly with his eyes downcast throughout her statement.
She said she did this for Clayton, in an attempt to stand up for him, something she said nobody else in his life had ever done. Kogut also told the court of the premonition she had that something was wrong with her daughter in the early morning hours of Sept.
At one point, she said, she felt Alex leave her and fell to her knees. Students and staff were notified of the death via email, social media and a message posted on the school's website. Kogut's family released a statement thanking the community for their support and asking for privacy during their time of grief. On a "Remembering Alex Kogut" Facebook page, friends pledged to wear purple, the color for domestic violence awareness, today in honor of the freshman.
Whittemore remains in the custody of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon. We'll notify you here with news about. Turn on desktop notifications for breaking stories about interest?
