That same year, he was arrested for stealing horses in Indian Territory present-day Oklahoma , although his case never went to trial. In , Earp was living in Peoria, Illinois, working as an enforcer in a brothel. He went on to spend time as a buffalo hunter before moving to Wichita, Kansas, in Wichita was a cattle-shipping center and in Earp got hired as a policeman there. Holliday, a Georgia native born in , had studied dentistry in Philadelphia. In , he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and doctors recommended he move to a drier climate.
He went to Dallas in and established a partnership with another dentist; however, Holliday soon turned his attention from fixing teeth to drinking and gambling. Earp and Holliday became friends on the Texas gambling circuit in the late s, and Doc participated in the gunfight at the OK Corral in Six years later, Holliday died of tuberculosis at age 36 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
Devastated, he sold his newly bought house and left town to move around the Indian Territory and Kansas. During this period, Earp frequented the saloons, gambling houses and brothels that proliferated on the frontier, and had several run-ins with law enforcement. It was in Dodge City that Earp would make the acquaintance of Doc Holliday, a well-known gunman and gambler.
The town was booming after a silver rush, and most of the Earp family had gathered there. Virgil was working as the town marshal, and Wyatt began working alongside him. In March , while pursuing a group of cowboys who had robbed a stagecoach, Wyatt struck a deal with local rancher Ike Clanton, who had ties to the cowboys. Clanton soon turned against him, however, and began threatening the Earp brothers.
The feud escalated, and finally exploded into violence on October 26, at the O. Ike Clanton filed murder charges against the Earp brothers and Holliday, but a judge cleared them in late November. In December, Virgil was shot and seriously wounded by unknown attackers; the following March, Morgan was killed when unknown gunmen attacked him and Wyatt at a Tombstone saloon. On a hunt for the culprits, Wyatt and his gang killed several suspects, then decided to leave town to avoid prosecution.
After leaving Tombstone, Wyatt Earp moved around the West, eventually settling in California with Josephine Marcus, with whom he would spend the next 40 years. Over the years, he made a living by gambling, saloon-keeping, mining and real estate speculation. He also worked with a personal secretary, John H. Flood, to write his memoirs, which received a poor reception during his lifetime. A small scene showing the graphic result of that meeting has been re-inserted, with the line "They got McMasters!
User reviews Review. Top review. For Val, a role of a lifetime. I wont review the film here as it has all been said before. I did want to praise Val Kilmer's portrayal of "Doc" Holiday. Throughout the entire film, his acting and character embellishments are so nuanced and well done that by movies end, we feel his loss in a very personal way. Credit must also go out the the costumers and make-up artists for their contribution to the overall effect of his role.
All the way through the film, he looks sickly, pale and world-weary. His mannerisms and intensity of gaze profoundly establish this character as a focal point in this production. But as for what I started this off with, I consider this role as probably the very best for Val Kilmer. It required subtlety and careful restraint and made the viewer believe that we weren't watching an actor merely regurgitating lines and hitting their foot-marks.
I, for one, was entranced by the carefully studied body language and facial expressions This was just very well done! FAQ Who was Claude, mentioned after Virgil was ambushed? Was Doc Holliday a real doctor? What is Doc's illness? Details Edit. Release date December 25, United States.
United States. English Latin Spanish. Old Tucson - S. Box office Edit. Technical specs Edit. Runtime 2 hours 10 minutes. Dolby Stereo. Related news. Virgil Earp, played here by Sam Elliott and his legendary mustache , is the oldest and wisest of the Earp brothers and appoints himself the marshal of Tombstone, a decision that brings more trouble to the small town. Following the shootout at the O. Corral, Virgil, and other members of the Earps' group, is injured and left handicapped, which ultimately leads to the surviving brothers' decision to leave town once and for all.
And even though Wyatt Earp stays back to settle things for good, Virgil is able to escape with his new wife and make a new life for himself.
Not to be outdone by older brothers, Morgan Earp, portrayed by the late, great Bill Paxton, is right there in thick of it throughout much of Tombstone , including the famous shootout at the O. Following the events of the showdown with the Cowboys, life seems to go back to normal, but one night while Morgan is playing pool, he is ambushed and shot in the back. The bullet, having done too much damage to Morgan's already weakened body, takes the youngest Earp as his brother, Wyatt, tries to save his life.
And although Morgan's story ends here , it's just the beginning of things to come. On the other side of the central conflict in Tombstone is Curly Bill Brocius, one of the senior members of the outlaw gang, the Cowboys. As soon as Brocius, played by Powers Boothe, comes into the picture in the opening minutes of the movie, you know he will meet a painful and justified death for his actions. And we get just that in the final act of the movie when he, and most of his men, are taken out by a vengeful Wyatt Earp after the lawman's brother, Morgan, is viciously murdered.
No more carrying out massacres for this cowboy with a hole in his gut. The first time we see Michael Biehn's Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday encounter one another, we know these will have one final showdown before everything is said and done.
