Pain decided to put these two together because of their unique abilities. Hidan could not be killed as a result of becoming the successful " Jashin experiment", even by decapitation, and Kakuzu could easily go into a rage and kill anyone around him, including his partner. Therefore, Kakuzu could go berserk and not worry about Hidan's well-being. They have shown the most hostility towards each other due to a conflict of interest; Kakuzu saw the rituals and beliefs of Hidan's religion to be a waste of time, while Hidan saw Kakuzu's willingness to do blasphemous things and his greediness to be unbearable, not to mention that Kakuzu's job as a bounty hunter usually got on Hidan's nerves.
As a result of their sideline in collecting bounties and conducting rituals, this team was usually late in the line of work. Despite this, they work flawlessly in battle by using Kakuzu's reckless attack style in conjuncture with Hidan's immortality. A team that functioned very well with each other as Nagato and Konan were team in the past when their friend Yahiko was still alive. Acting as the leader of Akatsuki using Yahiko's corpse as a medium to act through, Pain directed the rest of the organisation to their respective goals; his most direct interaction with the other members was using the Sealing Technique: Phantom Dragons Nine Consuming Seals.
In addition, Pain was the leader of Amegakure , and used the village as a base for Akatsuki matters, while Konan served as the village's second-in-command. However, after Pain's defeat and Nagato's death, Konan left the organisation. Sasori claimed that he and Orochimaru worked well together during their partnership. However, when Orochimaru defected from Akatsuki after his failed attempt to steal Itachi 's body, Sasori developed a grudge against his former partner. Formed by the two artists of Akatsuki, Sasori and Deidara worked well for the most part but had conflicting ideas on art: Sasori believed in art forever preserved like his puppet while Deidara sees it to be intantaneous and gone in a flash like Explosive Clay.
Ironically though, Sasori was impatient and liked to finish things quickly while Deidara liked to take his time. Sasori also had a network of spies that he manipulated in the form of mind control to aid Akatsuki in their affairs. Deidara was formerly a terrorist bomber for hire who was later recruited by Itachi. Interestingly, both members of this team made the conscious decision to die, Sasori by allowing himself to be impaled by the puppet replicas of his parents and Deidara blowing himself up, thus becoming art.
The two were reunited when reincarnated during the Fourth Shinobi World War. After Sasori's death, posing as a idiot at the time, Tobi was introduced as Deidara's new partner. Despite Tobi's eagerness to please his "senpai", his childish attitude was seen as an annoyance to Deidara's expectations of the organisation. Despite the eminent irritation, the two worked well together, as evidenced by Tobi planting Deidara's explosive clay mines underground during Deidara's last stand against Sasuke.
Deidara also tries to protect Tobi, although the latter usually annoys him with his playful personality. After Deidara's death, Tobi revealed his true personality and began to actively work to his own goals. A team that, despite their first meeting, functioned very well together and was highly effective. The pair completed almost every assignment Pain gave them with little trouble with the Nine-Tails being the only known exception.
With Itachi working as a double agent, however, Itachi failed this mission purposely. Unlike most Akatsuki teams, Itachi and Kisame got along pretty well; Kisame did as Itachi had asked him unquestioningly and they would often converse casually when not in combat.
However, this was later shown to be a ploy designed by Tobi to infiltrate the Land of Lightning. Before that, however, Kisame was able to capture the Four-Tails. Although not exactly a "two-man team", the secondary Black Zetsu personality that Madara infused into White Zetsu made Zetsu effective as such despite occasional arguments. Furthermore, because of his nature as an artificial human, Zetsu's personalities can split into two to act individually.
Another unique feature of White Zetsu is his ability to create clones that are biologically produced compared to the regular clones manifested of chakra.
When Akatsuki's ranks are thinned to five members, Tobi enlists the aid of renamed group Taka, whose leader Sasuke Uchiha shares the desire for the destruction of Konoha. Technically, the members of Taka are not full members of Akatsuki, as they do not possess the rings worn by each of the primary members.
Like many of the other members of the first Akatsuki generation, Madara Uchiha defeated him so that he could manipulate Nagato into collecting the Tailed Beasts with a stronger version of the organization. He tried to defeat Tobi and Zetsu before they had a chance to manipulate Nagato into using the organization for their own benefit but to no avail. He uses his impressive size and strength to wield giant, blunt weapons in the battle to weaken and tire opponents so he can detain them in his Water Prison Jutsu.
Kyusuke is one of the strongest members of the original Akatsuki, as he possesses incredible speed, can utilize sword techniques to overwhelm opponents, and can use higher level nature transformation techniques to surprise and petrify unsuspecting foes. Though he is unnamed and unexplored in the original manga, in the anime Kyusuke is shown to combine fire and earth elemental transformations to utilize extremely powerful Lava Release techniques.
In any other circumstance Kyusuke would undoubtedly be one of the strongest ninja around, but against these super elite criminals, he is simply not able to measure up. He also possesses enough physical strength to wield the giant sword with ease and was respected enough to partner up with the incredibly strong Itachi Uchiha on a mission to take on the Fourth Mizukage.
White Zetsu is an Akatsuki member with a unique genetic composition that grants him access to a variety of useful techniques and gives him a distinctive pale complexion with plant-like appendages. He can use every basic nature transformation to the fullest extent possible and can even use advanced Wood Release techniques. Although he is a difficult foe for most ninjas to take on, most of the other Akatsuki members could defeat White Zetsu with either their raw power or their own, and a more varied arsenal of bizarre techniques.
The original founder of the Akatsuki, Yahiko is presumably an exceptionally talented and powerful ninja. Possessing fire, water, and wind nature affinities, Yahiko learned ninjutsu from the legendary Sannin Jiraiya and is strong enough to command an entire army of ninjas against the established Hidden Rain Village authorities.
To do this he would have to possess a level of power and charisma far above most ninja. Even if his good intentions were misused, it still took an incredible amount of power build up the original Akatsuki.
This makes the cultist ninja a challenging opponent to defeat, but rather easy to incapacitate if an enemy knows about his two abilities. In fact, Shikamaru Nara is able to defeat Hidan rather easily by preventing him from drawing his damage transfer symbol and breaking up his limbs so he cannot attack.
Sure, it might be difficult to defeat Hidan without proper research, but even a little bit of planning is enough to best this immortal ninja. A facet of the franchise that made it so captivating and aided its popularity was its villains.
From the terrifying and vengeful Orochimaru to the ninja god Madara, Naruto and friends always had powerful foes. However, arguably the most influential antagonist of the series was the terrorist organization known as the Akatsuki. Made up of powerful rogue ninja's hellbent on the destruction of the ninja world, the Akatsuki were a fan favorite. Despite their popularity, the pasts of several members are shrouded in mystery, including their ages.
The cheery immortal Hidan was one of the last Akatsuki recruits. A loyal follower of the cult-like faith Jashin, Hidan lacked the raw power of many Akatsuki members , but made it up for it with his immortality. He plays a significant role in the anime, killing Asuma Sarutobi and engaging in an epic battle with Shikamaru.
It's unknown exactly when Hidan joined the Akatsuki. He is technically still alive, buried underground somewhere. But he was 22 years old when last seen and as the second newest member, he was probably in his 20s when he joined. The youngest member of the Akatsuki, Deidara was a rogue ninja from the Iwagakure village. After being defeated by Itachi, Deidara begrudgingly joined the organization and was a valued member. His explosive kekkei genkai made him a fearsome opponent and his destructive power was a valuable asset.
During his time as a criminal, Deidara successfully captured Gaara of the sand. Deidara was about 14 years old when he joined and 19 years old when he met his fate at the hands of Sasuke Uchiha. Known as Sasori of the red sand, the powerful ninja was a master of puppets in combat. At some point in his life, he defeated the Third Kazekage, a legendary ninja known as the strongest Kage of the Hidden Sand Village.
They have only each other to rely on. Though the Akatsuki are widely reviled, viewers are given the opportunity to empathize with the villains.
The Akatsuki were formed by a powerful fighter named Yahiko who was tired of seeing his country ravaged in the world's conflicts. Alongside other orphans of that conflict, he founded the splinter group as a means to end the violent spasms that wracked the world.
Yahiko's time as leader came to an end, however, and others stepped up to head the Akatsuki according to their own desires. Some leaders attempted to end the wars by economically undermining countries, so that they could not afford to create conflict. Others attempted to unite the nations of the world through conquest. The end goal was always the same, however: ending world wars.
Given this noble cause, and the aura of cool around all fictional criminal organizations, plenty of " Killmonger was right "-style discourse has cropped up around the Akatsuki. While they are nearly entirely liquidated during the show's own Shinobi War, the group still has its defenders.
Though the Akatsuki are no longer a threat to the characters of Naruto, two of its longest-serving and most devoted members are still alive. Black Zetsu, a non-human member of the Akatsuki who was working to revive an ancient being, is sealed away but still very much alive.
Hidan , an immortal human member of the Akatsuki, is around as well. He is buried alive by Shikamaru Nara but vows revenge with his last breath above ground. He tells Shikamaru that the world will never be truly safe from him, and said that he'll find a way to wreak havoc once more. Even if you destroy my body, and I'm left with nothing but my head," he promises vengefully.
In spite of their undying devotion to villainy, there exists a timeline where the Akatsuki are not a world-ending cult of powerful shinobi. Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie sees Naruto and Sasuke trapped in the test version of the Akatsuki's dream-state world, created by Akatsuki leader Tobi.
There, they encounter an Akatsuki that acts as a neutral mercenary force. These Akatsuki of the "Genjustu World" are able to make their living in the same way the Five Great Nations fuel their own economies: Renting out their services as ninjas to other countries and people in need of escorts. The fact that they don't have to resort to criminal activity to stay afloat, and the relative ease with which they move through this fictional world, leads to them being held in much higher standing by the world at large.
The Akatsuki of the dream world are still largely loyal to their home countries, they just refuse to work for the government, instead taking on their own contracts.
In an unforgettable moment, the Akatsuki of the Genjutsu World even fight alongside Naruto. A twist on the tale to be certain, and one not soon forgotten by fans. Black Zetsu is monstrous and inhuman, a living manifestation of a deranged god-figure's will to keep on living.
While Zetsu is the only "monster" in the group, creator Masashi Kishimoto reveals in the companion book Sha no Sho that he originally intended for all of the Akatsuki to be inhuman creatures.
Though he abandoned this idea once he sat down to write, it can be seen in Zetsu's inclusion, and the fact that all members of the group have something that makes them slightly more than human.
