This massively popular piece of prose has been around for hundreds of years. In that time, it has undergone a fair amount of alterations. In fact, the version of Humpty Dumpty that we now know is vastly different from the likely inspiration of the rhyme. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
However, it is quite likely that the story behind this innocent little rhyme is a lot different than what most people picture when they hear Humpty Dumpty. The first thing that most people notice when they start examining this nursery rhyme is that there is no explicit reference to eggs in the entire thing.
So why is it that everyone universally pictures an anthropomorphic egg in their mind whenever they think of Humpty Dumpty? Surprisingly, this is a direct result of the famous writer Lewis Carroll. His classic book Through the Looking-Glass involves many sets of extremely unusual characters, one of which happens to be a human-like egg that goes by the name of Humpty Dumpty.

The egg is also a symbol of the earth, which is not round but slightly egg-shaped. Humpty was sitting on a wall, maybe just enjoying the view from up there. But there is always a deeper meaning to things. A wall separates two areas, but it can also separate two courses of action. So here is an egg, representing infinite possibility, not making a choice to live its destiny.
Could this be like so many of us, too afraid to really commit to a path of action, to a relationship, or to find our true purpose here on earth — and then live it.
And why have I come to this conclusion about the wall? We actually need to fall. We cannot grow without experiencing all our feelings, including joy and pain, love and fear, peace and anger.
And yes, our shell must be broken into a thousand pieces. Our egos must be shattered if there is any hope of entering the light of spirituality.
